Thematic Workshop: Draft Plan for Implementing the Circular Economy in Building Materials Production

Overview of the workshop
Attending the workshop on behalf of VIBM were Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep – Director of VIBM, who chaired the workshop, together with the Institute’s leadership, departmental staff and researchers.
The workshop was attended by many leading experts in fields such as climate change (Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi Architectural University, the Centre for Energy and Green Growth Research) and building materials (Vietnam Building Materials Association, Vietnam Building Ceramics Association, Vietnam National Cement Association, Vietnam Concrete Association, Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology – IBST). The workshop also attracted strong interest from many building material manufacturers and cement plants, such as Viglacera Corporation, Prime Group JSC, Prime Tien Phong JSC, and the Thang Long, But Son, Duyen Ha, Hoang Thach, Hoang Mai, Vissai and Tan Thang cement plants…
Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep – Director of VIBM – emphasised the importance of the task, especially gathering comments from experts, managers and enterprises before the research outputs are issued and applied in practice.
On behalf of the project team, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam (MSc.) presented the expected results of the task in her paper “Draft Decision promulgating the plan for implementing the circular economy in building materials production”. The objectives of the plan include: reducing the extraction and use of non-renewable resources; increasing the efficiency of resource and material use; saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions; increasing the rate of waste use and recycling and reducing landfilled waste; reducing total product life-cycle costs through optimisation of raw materials and fuels; attracting green credit, green bonds and other legitimate resources for circular economy projects; ensuring transparency, reliability and fair competition through information disclosure, conformity assessment and certification; and building a sustainable database for reference, disclosure and risk management.
The plan also sets out solutions for implementing the circular economy, proposes priority sub-sectors and develops programmes, tasks and action plans for implementing the circular economy in the construction sector until 2035.
At the workshop, delegates held lively discussions on the content and results of the project team. The research results were highly appreciated for their practicality and clearly reflected the role and responsibility of the Ministry of Construction in promoting the circular economy in building materials production.
Closing the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep thanked the experts and delegates for attending and requested the project team to incorporate the comments and finalise the research content to ensure quality and progress as required.
