Training Course “Timber – A Material Solution for Low-Emission Construction in Viet Nam”

Attending the training on behalf of VIBM were Ms. Luu Thi Hong – Deputy Director of VIBM, together with heads and deputy heads of affiliated units, as well as specialists and researchers of the Institute. Guests included Ms. Tran Nhu Trang – SIPPO Country Representative in Viet Nam; Mr. Nguyen Phuong – Vice Chairman of the Dong Nai Wood Association (DOWA); Ms. Vu Thi Thu Hang – representative of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Viet Nam; and notably Mr. Laurent Corpataux – SIPPO expert, Regional Director for Southeast Asia of Haring Timber Technology and co-founder of Lignocore Associates (Singapore and Switzerland), who has extensive experience in timber construction and the development of low-carbon solutions.

Deputy Director Luu Thi Hong speaking at the training
In her opening speech, Deputy Director Luu Thi Hong emphasised the urgent need to transform the construction sector towards green and sustainable development. She also affirmed VIBM’s desire to promote research and transfer of low-carbon material solutions, in which timber is a highly promising option.
The training consisted of a series of in-depth lectures on topics of interest in sustainable construction trends:
- From Carbon Neutrality to Carbon-Smart Construction
- Understanding and assessing embodied carbon – Core indicators in the material life cycle
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)
- Timber – a carbon-negative material: international experience and application potential in Viet Nam
- Integrating carbon emission data into standards and policies.
Through these topics, VIBM researchers gained up-to-date knowledge on carbon emission measurement, the use of timber in low-emission buildings, and directions for developing future carbon standards and policies.
After a day of serious and productive work, the training concluded successfully. Delegates, guests and VIBM researchers highly appreciated the practicality and technical value of the content shared, especially the international experience in using timber in construction and the life cycle assessment process for materials. In the future, VIBM will continue to cooperate with domestic and international organisations to carry out further training and in-depth research activities serving the goal of low-emission construction in Viet Nam.
