Report Meeting on the Project Assessing and Inventorying Greenhouse Gases in Building Materials Production and Proposing Suitable Management Solutions

On 15 January 2019, the Scientific Council of the Vietnam Institute for Building Materials (VIBM) held an acceptance meeting for the project “Assessment and inventory of greenhouse gases in building materials production (cement, glass, ceramic tiles, fired clay bricks, sanitary ware) and proposal of suitable management solutions”, led by Eng. Pham Bang Hai. Mr. Nguyen Van Huynh (MSc.) – Deputy Director of VIBM – chaired the Council, which included experts from the Vietnam Building Materials Association, the Vietnam Association for Construction Environment, the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, V-LEEP – USAID, VICEM and universities.

Viet Nam is currently one of the countries most severely affected by climate change. The country has therefore set a target of reducing total greenhouse gas emissions by 8% compared with business as usual by 2030 using domestic resources, and by up to 25% with international support.

Building materials production consumes large amounts of raw materials and fuels. According to calculations based on incomplete data, in 2015 the building materials sector emitted about 60 million tonnes of CO2 . In addition to CO2 , the firing process – through combustion and decomposition of fuels and raw materials – also releases gases such as NOx, SO2 … With the aim of managing and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in Viet Nam in general and in the construction sector in particular, it is urgent to assess and calculate greenhouse gas emissions for building materials production; the project “Assessment and inventory of greenhouse gases in building materials production (cement, glass, ceramic tiles, fired clay bricks, sanitary ware) and proposal of suitable management solutions” was therefore urgently carried out.

After the presentation by the project leader and the reviewers’ comments, the Council found that the report provides fairly complete data, research and applications related to the task, including an overview of production and the current status of greenhouse gas emissions in building materials production, the methodology for greenhouse gas inventory, the determination of input data and calculation of emissions, and proposals for suitable management and emission-reduction solutions.

The Council highly appreciated the efforts of the research team. It also pointed out shortcomings and points to be revised and supplemented, especially regarding the software, calculation data and guidance on the IPCC-based calculation method, in order to finalise the report “Assessment and inventory of greenhouse gases in building materials production (cement, glass, ceramic tiles, fired clay bricks, sanitary ware) and proposal of suitable management solutions”.
