Talk “Green Housing – Healthy Living: Household Waste and Energy Saving”
Monday, 24 April 2023, 18:00–20:30
Goethe-Institut Hanoi, 56-58-60 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi
Household waste and energy saving are pressing issues affecting the daily life of urban residents in Vietnam, especially in large cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. To create a forum for discussing the current situation and practical, concrete solutions for energy consumption in line with Vietnam’s climate goals, the Goethe-Institut, in cooperation with the University of Hamburg (Germany), organised the talk GREEN HOUSING – HEALTHY LIVING: HOUSEHOLD WASTE & ENERGY SAVING.
The talk shared multidisciplinary expertise from a research project funded by the German government. The project developed a publication on Green Housing – Healthy Living with an approach accessible to the general public in Vietnam. The “Green Housing – Healthy Living” handbook follows a holistic, multidisciplinary approach, providing practical guidance on planning, designing, building, operating and maintaining sustainable housing and behaviours to improve energy efficiency and quality of life. Its principles and solutions can be applied to all other types of housing in Vietnam.
As a national science and technology research institute serving state management and the development of the building materials industry, including the field of the built environment, three scientists of the Vietnam Institute for Building Materials were invited to speak at the talk: Dr. Luu Thi Hong – Deputy Director of VIBM; MSc. Nguyen Thi Tam – Director of the Centre for Equipment, Environment and Occupational Safety (now the Centre for Environment and Construction Mechanics); and Dr. Le Thi Song – researcher at the Centre – sharing the current state of household waste treatment and residential energy saving in Vietnam. Domestic and international experts in urban environment also spoke at the talk.

In 2022, the Vietnam Institute for Building Materials carried out the research project “Technology for using energy-containing municipal solid waste in cement clinker production”, with the following objectives:
- Survey, assess and classify municipal solid waste (MSW);
- Study the co-processing of MSW as an alternative fuel in cement clinker production;
- Develop technical guidelines for the pre-treatment and co-processing of energy-containing MSW as an alternative fuel in cement clinker production;
- Propose solutions, mechanisms and policies for using energy-containing MSW as an alternative fuel in cement clinker production
The results show that Vietnamese MSW can be used as an alternative fuel in cement production if suitable pre-treatment and co-processing measures are applied. VIBM has also drafted Technical Guidelines on the pre-treatment and co-processing of MSW as an alternative fuel in cement clinker production, which will serve as a basis for pre-treatment and co-processing units.
