Attending the working session were Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep – Director of VIBM; Dr. Nguyen Quang Cung – Chairman of the Vietnam National Cement Association; Dr. Luong Duc Long – Vice Chairman of the Vietnam National Cement Association; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Hoanh Son – Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology; Mr. Cao Tien Phu (MSc.) – Head of the Planning and Technical Department (VIBM); Ms. Trinh Thi Cham (MSc.) – Deputy Head of the Planning and Technical Department (VIBM); Mr. Nguyen Van Xuan – Chairman and Director of Chung Son Mechanical Co., Ltd.; Ms. Pham Thi Chung – Deputy Director of Chung Son Mechanical Co., Ltd.; and members of the project team.

With rapid economic growth and urbanisation, the environment is suffering from the rapid increase in municipal and industrial solid waste. In this context, VIBM was assigned by the Ministry of Construction the task of “researching technology, calculating, designing, manufacturing, installing and operating a pilot indirect combustion system (auxiliary combustion chamber) for these waste sources to generate energy as alternative fuel in cement plants”.

At the working session, Eng. Tran Thanh Binh said that the project team, together with Chung Son Mechanical Co., Ltd., had successfully manufactured an indirect combustion system for use in cement plants, which is now in trial operation. Operating on the step combustor (SC) principle, the system can use various alternative fuels, including lump alternative fuels with low calorific value and municipal waste. This allows the use of waste sources of diverse types and sizes with simple and rapid pre-processing. The system uses gas burners for heating, and the kiln and interlocking equipment are simply designed, allowing quick and easy maintenance. First, the fuel is fed into the feed chute by a special screw conveyor. Under the conveying pressure of the screw, the fuel is lifted onto the first step. At this step, the fuel is heated by hot tertiary air passing through it, and volatiles begin to be released. The various volatiles are transported by pulse jets.

Commenting at the session, experts highly appreciated the practical significance of the project. Using municipal and industrial solid waste in place of traditional fuels not only helps plants save costs and lower product prices while maintaining quality, but also helps reduce CO2 emissions, reduce environmental pollution and save resources. The experts also described the actual conditions at cement plants so that the project team can further optimise its waste combustion system.

After the summary progress report and comments, the VIBM delegation and experts visited the site to observe the operation of the indirect combustion system researched, installed and manufactured by the project team and Chung Son Mechanical Co., Ltd.
