According to recent statistics, buildings account for about 35–40% of total energy consumption in Vietnam. This makes it urgent to implement energy-saving solutions in construction, bringing major benefits to the economy and improving quality of life for the community. Applying energy-saving solutions in buildings not only reduces operating costs and energy consumption but also cuts greenhouse gas emissions, a key factor in responding to climate change. It is also part of the strategy to build a sustainable society and protect the environment for future generations.

Recently, Typhoon No. 3 (Yagi) caused severe damage, a clear warning of the need for safety in building design and construction, especially for aluminium-glass door and window systems. Hundreds of houses and buildings suffered damage to their glazing from strong winds and tornadoes, highlighting the importance of using durable, strong door and window materials and assemblies suited to Vietnam’s harsh climate.

To implement Prime Minister’s Decision No. 280/QD-TTg of 13 March 2019 approving the National Programme on Energy Efficiency and Conservation for 2019–2030, and Ministry of Construction Decision No. 1677/QD-BXD of 30 December 2020 issuing the Ministry’s plan for energy efficiency and conservation tasks for 2020–2030, the Vietnam Institute for Building Materials held the workshop “Energy-Saving and Safety Solutions for Housing and Buildings” with the aims to:

1. Disseminate regulations on energy saving in housing and buildings to raise awareness among stakeholders in investment, construction and operation, including investors, design consultants, contractors and operators.

2. Assess the current state of testing, inspection and certification of energy-saving building materials to ensure quality, safety and effectiveness in use.

3. Discuss and propose energy-efficient solutions for housing and buildings to improve operational efficiency and reduce energy costs.

4. Discuss and propose solutions to improve the safety of aluminium-glass door and window systems – a key factor in protecting buildings and reducing damage from natural disasters

The workshop was attended by Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep – Director of the Vietnam Institute for Building Materials, Ministry of Construction; Mr Nguyen Cong Thinh – Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Ministry of Construction; Mr Ngo Quoc Huan – Chairman of the Vietnam Door Association; Mr Nguyen Quang Huy – Chairman and CEO of HDWIN JSC; and Mr Douglas L. Snyder – Executive Director of the Vietnam Green Building Council.

It also brought together more than 70 guests representing departments and agencies, enterprises, professional associations, construction and supervision firms, universities, colleges, research institutes, experts and architects in architecture and construction.

Overview of the workshop

Presentations at the workshop focused not only on energy-saving solutions but also on the latest safety solutions for housing and buildings, especially aluminium-glass doors and windows. Advanced technologies such as tempered glass, heat-resistant and impact-resistant aluminium-glass systems and multi-point hardware that improve wind and storm resistance were discussed in detail.

The event was also an opportunity for manufacturers and contractors to jointly identify and implement solutions to increase the use of aluminium-glass systems with outstanding energy-saving performance and high safety suited to Vietnam’s severe storm conditions – an indispensable future trend. Environmentally friendly, energy-saving materials will play a leading role in building energy-efficient and green buildings, contributing to the net-zero emissions target committed by the Prime Minister at COP26 and moving closer to sustainable development. This is also an important step in narrowing the gap between Vietnam’s construction industry and those of advanced countries.

Also within the framework of the workshop, VIBM and HDWIN officially signed a cooperation agreement to jointly research and promote the practical use of aluminium-glass doors and windows with high energy-saving and safety performance.

The workshop was featured in the Finance and Business news bulletin on VTV1 on the morning of 16 September: https://vtv.vn/…/tai-chinh-kinh-doanh-sang-16-9-2024…
