Cement production is an energy-intensive industry with potential risks of air and water pollution. The production process uses large amounts of mineral resources and energy, and generates waste such as flue gases, wastewater, solid waste and dust that affect the environment. Along with society’s growing awareness of environmental protection, the Government has introduced policies and measures to promote energy saving, waste reduction, and fuel and energy consumption norms for the cement industry.

The project surveyed the current state of production and collected environmental information. It assessed waste sources and the causes of waste generation to obtain an overall picture of the environmental impact and the effectiveness of environmental protection measures being applied at production facilities.

The document “Guidelines for environmental protection in cement production” was developed to present measures for minimising, treating and managing waste generated during cement production, with the following objectives:

  • – Minimising pollution at source;
  • – Thoroughly treating waste sources in a manner suited to the economic conditions of production facilities, meeting the requirements of the Law on Environmental Protection, minimising negative environmental impacts and ensuring sustainable development;

– Improving and applying suitable new technologies that ensure product quality and the interests of production facilities.

The draft handbook “Guidelines for environmental protection in cement production” includes the following contents:

Part 1: Sources of pollution and pollution control in cement production

Part 2: Obligations of cement plants for environmental protection as required by regulations

Part 3: Environmental protection solutions in cement production

Part 4: Legal documents related to the environment in cement production

Developing environmental protection guidelines helps cement investors choose technologies, equipment and environmental management measures that are more effective and suited to actual conditions in Viet Nam for sustainable development.

The task was unanimously approved by members of the Science and Technology Council; the project leader is to revise the report according to the experts’ comments and submit it to the Ministry of Construction as soon as possible.
