Meeting to Approve Draft Criteria for Assessing and Classifying Asbestos-Cement Roofing Sheet Producers and a Roadmap to Reduce Impacts on the Environment and Workers’ Health

Asbestos-cement (AC) roofing sheet producers currently use technologies with different levels of automation, and their environmental protection measures and impacts on workers differ accordingly. It is therefore necessary to “develop criteria for assessing and classifying asbestos-cement roofing sheet producers and a roadmap for improving production technology and reducing impacts on the environment and workers’ health” to meet legal requirements.

The draft sets out 3 groups of criteria for assessing and classifying asbestos-cement roofing sheet producers, with 24 detailed criteria and a maximum total score of 500 points:

  • Group 1 – Criteria to be implemented immediately;
  • Group 2 – Criteria to be implemented by December 2017;
  • Group 3 – Criteria encouraged for application.

Assessing and classifying asbestos-cement roofing sheet producers against specific criteria allows a correct evaluation of producers according to their level of technology, management and environmental impact, and provides a basis for regulators to apply the necessary sanctions to manage production effectively and in an environmentally friendly way.

The Institute’s Science and Technology Council highly appreciated the efforts of the project team and unanimously approved the draft, subject to revisions and finalisation according to the Council’s comments, for submission to the Ministry of Construction for acceptance as required.
