VIBM Works with J-CHIF on Solar-Reflective Paints
Continuing the research cooperation between the Vietnam Institute for Building Materials (VIBM) and the Japan Housing and Building Materials Industry Association (J-CHIF), on 10 October 2016 VIBM Deputy Director Nguyen Van Huynh received and worked with a J-CHIF expert delegation on solar-reflective paints. Also attending were researchers from the Centre for Organic Materials and Construction Chemicals, the Centre for Equipment, Environment and Occupational Safety (now the Centre for Environment and Construction Mechanics), and a representative of the Centre for Information – Standards – International Cooperation.
Many heat-reflective paints (solar-reflective paints) for buildings are currently available on the Vietnamese market. However, Vietnam does not yet have a technical requirements standard for these products, which makes quality control difficult. In response, the Ministry of Construction assigned VIBM to draft the standard Solar-reflective paints – Technical requirements. Among foreign standards, only the Japanese system sets requirements for solar-reflective paints. This meeting was an opportunity for VIBM researchers to learn about and discuss these standards with Japanese experts.
At the meeting, J-CHIF experts introduced several Japanese standards on technical requirements and test methods for solar-reflective paints, such as JIS K 5602 – Determination of reflectance of solar radiation and JIS K 5675 – Technical requirements for solar-reflective paints. They also pointed out issues to consider when applying these standards in Vietnam. The two sides then discussed in depth the technical issues of standard development, in particular recalculating parameters to suit Vietnam’s climate.
Through the meeting, VIBM and J-CHIF agreed on the need to strengthen the exchange of information on standards with a view to future cooperation programmes on standard development. As standardisation is a strength of both VIBM and J-CHIF, cooperation between the two sides is expected to be highly effective.
