Research on Technology for Processing Municipal Solid Waste into Bio-Organic Fertiliser Meeting Environmental Standards

Every year, Viet Nam generates 15 million tonnes of waste of all kinds, of which municipal solid waste accounts for more than 80% (about 12.8 million tonnes). The proper management and treatment of solid waste has become a pressing issue for most provinces and cities. Most landfills lack pollution treatment systems or have none at all and are often located near residential areas, causing negative impacts on the environment and surrounding communities.

In this context, the Ministry of Construction assigned the Vietnam Institute for Building Materials the project “Research on technology for processing municipal solid waste into bio-organic fertiliser meeting environmental standards”, code RD-54/06.

The project completed the research, manufacture and installation of a tower-type composting system and applied it at the Dong Vinh waste treatment plant in Nghe An.

The results show that the vertical composting tower has many advantages:
– Loading and unloading are well mechanised, minimising heavy manual labour.
– Technological factors in the line are better controlled. Instruments for measuring temperature, humidity, etc. facilitate process control.
– If a plant installs several adjacent towers, the investment cost of factory buildings can be significantly reduced, especially compared with static windrow composting turned by wheel loaders.

The technical process proposed by the project is suitable for processing municipal solid waste into bio-organic fertiliser meeting the permitted standards, contributing actively to improving domestic waste treatment technologies to meet current urgent needs and making Viet Nam’s environment ever greener, cleaner and more beautiful.
